What to Do During a Dental Emergency
During a dental emergency, the best course of action is always to seek the immediate help or advice of a medical professional. If an emergency is severe, especially if a large amount of blood loss has occurred, then you should seek immediate medical attention from a hospital or call 911. If the case is less severe, here are some actions you can take that may be able to help you preserve a tooth:
- Knocked-out tooth – If a tooth has been knocked-out, it’s important to keep it moist. This can be accomplished by placing the tooth in milk, putting it between the cheek and gums, or using an ADA approved tooth preservation kit. Then, get to a dentist’s office as soon as possible.
- Cracked tooth – For a tooth that has been cracked or fractured, avoid chewing on the affected side and extreme hot or cold. Call for an urgent evaluation to be seen for possible further treatment.
- Swelling or infection – If you’re experiencing dental pain or swelling in the face, it may be possible that you have an infection. In this case, it’s best to stay in an upright position and drink plenty of fluids. Schedule an appointment for the same day if possible, or next day at the latest. For severe pain or infections, seek emergency treatment.
